Out with the old...in with the new!

2020 was a year filled with many challenges that nobody could ever have predicted. For many businesses unfortunately, these challenges were particularly hard to overcome. As we enter into 2021, we are faced with different challenges…not only is Covid-19 unfortunately still here, but we are now faced with added challenges as a result of the aftermath of Brexit.

On 31st December 2020 we said goodbye to our beloved GDPR, just as many businesses were getting to grips of it, but we are now welcoming the implementation of the UK-GDPR. Whilst the UK-GDPR is likely to be a carbon copy of the EU-GDPR, businesses still have some work to do to ensure their compliance framework meets the new legislative requirements.

For many businesses and SMEs, the implementation of the UK-GDPR acts as a timely reminder that there is no escaping GDPR!

The start of a new year is often a good opportunity to reflect on your business’ progress over the past year and plan how you want it to develop in the year ahead. Make 2021 the year in which your business enhances its existing GDPR compliance – no business can afford any negative damage to its reputation for breaching data protection legislation.

Many businesses have just about stayed afloat the past year, let’s not go down in 2021 as a result of poor GDPR compliance. Enhancing your business’ existing data protection compliance in line with the UK-GDPR will give you the peace of mind that you are doing all you can to avoid a data breach and developing positive mitigating factors to defend your business against any potential ICO investigation.

In turn, this should create a new positive change in data protection culture within the workplace, therefore increasing staff’s productivity, and also increasing your clients, customers and suppliers’ confidence that your business is protecting their data.

What can Briefed do to assist your business to ensure compliance with UK-GDPR?

  • Conduct a maturity assessment of your current level of compliance and identify any areas of potential risks which need to be addressed.
  • Update your compliance framework. Ensure all your policies are reflective of the new legislative changes, effective from 1st January 2021.
  • Conduct a data mapping exercise. Examine all your data flows and ensure any international data transfers have legal safeguards attached, otherwise that data transfer will now be unlawful.
  • Offer your staff up to date & appropriate GDPR training. Training is the best mitigating defence when faced with an ICO investigation.
  • Offer support. GDPR and compliance can be a mammoth and lonely task and often left to one individual to manage on top of their day job. Briefed offer a GDPR support service, bringing expertise to assist your DPO when faced with resolving complex data protection issues
