WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Five outcomes from this training

Understand what AI is as an umbrella term for different technologies and its development in recent years, alongside key terminology relevant to chambers

Identify AI-related risks that can affect barristers and chambers staff in their day-to-day roles, including data protection, confidentiality, and accuracy concerns

Understand the basic principles of responsible AI use and your role in adhering to best practices when using AI tools within chambers

Gain a broad overview of the benefits of AI use within chambers, including an introduction to the main providers already serving the legal sector

Recognise common use cases for AI across chambers and barristers’ practices, and the case-specific risks that members and staff need to be aware of

About this training

AI is already in use across chambers, whether or not there is a policy in place to manage it. Barristers and staff who do not understand what the technology is, how it works, and where it introduces risk are more likely to use it in ways that create data protection, confidentiality, and reputational problems for their set.

This course provides a clear and accessible introduction to AI for members and chambers staff. It covers the core concepts, the risks specific to the Bar, the principles of responsible use, and the practical benefits that AI tools can offer in a chambers context. It provides the foundational knowledge that supports chambers-wide compliance with whatever AI policy your set has in place or is developing.

Developed by Orlagh Kelly, Ben Murphy, and Chris Kelly, compliance specialist barristers working in-house at Briefed, the training draws on direct advisory experience helping chambers navigate AI policy and compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems or software that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. These include problem solving, language understanding, visual perception, learning, and decision-making. AI systems can be trained to recognise patterns, make predictions, and adapt based on new data.

Generative AI is a type of AI model that can create new content, such as text, images, audio, or video, rather than simply analysing existing data. Tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are examples of generative AI that are already in use across the legal sector.

AI works by analysing large sets of data, identifying patterns, and learning from them to make predictions or decisions. It relies on machine learning and deep learning models to produce results for its users. The quality and accuracy of those results depend heavily on the data the system was trained on.

Machine learning is a branch of AI that enables systems to learn from data without being explicitly programmed. Instead of following fixed rules, machine learning algorithms find patterns in historical data and use those patterns to make predictions or recommendations.

Deep learning is a branch of AI and machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to learn from large amounts of data. These networks are made up of many layers, allowing a system to detect complex patterns and relationships automatically without being explicitly programmed to do so.
