Pupil supervisor solutions for barristers' chambers.
The BSB requires a pupil supervisor to complete training before they take on a pupil, with refresher training required every three to five years. This is a fundamental requirement of pupillage. Briefed offers training covering all of a pupil supervisor's responsibilities, including pupil development, supported with a host of real-life scenarios. Briefed's Pupillage Supervisor Training is developed by in-house barristers who have supervised pupils and understand the challenges.
For pupils starting their journey in chambers, we also offer the New Pupil Starter Pack. This provides your pupils with a comprehensive onboarding package of 20+ training modules. The training covers GDPR, EDI, Wellbeing, general compliance and much more. It ensures that, from a compliance and risk perspective, pupils have everything they need.
What the BSB expects of pupil supervisors.
The BSB requires that anyone supervising a pupil completes mandatory pupil supervisor training before the pupillage commences. This is non-negotiable. The training should cover the supervisor's responsibilities, including developing competency, supporting wellbeing, and ensuring the pupil understands their own regulatory obligations.
Pupillage is the foundation of a barrister's career. The quality of supervision directly affects the pupil's development and their decision to stay at the Bar. Supervisors need to understand how to teach, assess competency and challenge appropriately, while ensuring the welfare of the pupil is paramount.
Chambers invest significant financial and operational resources to ensure success for both the pupil and for chambers. Good supervision means pupils are more likely to continue at the Bar and contribute meaningfully to the profession.
What this means in practice.
A pupil supervisor must observe the pupil's work, provide feedback, set increasingly challenging tasks, and keep records of competency development. The supervisor is also responsible for the pupil's wellbeing, especially in the first six months when many pupils struggle.
Assessment must be honest. If a pupil is struggling, the supervisor must address this directly and escalate if needed. Passing a pupil to the second seat when they are not ready creates problems later.
Chambers that produce strong barristers are those with strong pupillage programmes and supervisors who take the role seriously. This is how the profession renews itself.
