About this training
Musculoskeletal injuries are the single largest cause of workplace absence in the UK, accounting for 6.6 million lost working days. Chambers environments involve more manual handling than is often recognised — clerks and support staff moving files, furniture, and equipment, and barristers carrying substantial volumes of paperwork, brief bundles, and court materials to and from hearings.
This training module covers the correct techniques, legal obligations, and risk assessment procedures that apply to everyone in chambers. It is designed for all members and staff, and can be completed in 30 minutes at a time to suit.

Yes. Manual handling obligations under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 apply wherever individuals are required to move, lift, carry, push, pull, or lower items as part of their work. Barristers regularly carry large volumes of paperwork, brief bundles, and court materials — tasks that carry a genuine risk of injury without the right technique. This training is relevant to all members and staff in chambers.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess the risk from any manual handling that cannot be avoided, and reduce the risk of injury as far as reasonably practicable. Providing appropriate training forms part of that duty. Chambers must be able to demonstrate that staff and members have received suitable instruction.
Musculoskeletal injuries are injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, joints, or spinal discs — typically resulting from lifting, carrying, or repetitive movement tasks performed incorrectly or without adequate preparation. They are the most common type of workplace injury in the UK, and the leading cause of work-related absence. Most are preventable with correct technique and risk awareness.
The training takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and covers all six modules in a single session. It is available on-demand and can be completed at any time, making it straightforward to fit around a busy practice or chambers schedule.
There is no fixed statutory interval, but annual refresher training is widely considered best practice and is what most health and safety guidance recommends. Training should also be repeated if an individual’s role changes to involve new or different manual handling tasks, or following a workplace incident.
