Supporting experienced and future pupil supervisors with the knowledge to ensure the successful supervision of their pupil barristers, in line with Bar Standards Board requirements.

Following the Harman Review, which highlighted the unique vulnerability of pupils to bullying and harassment, pupil supervisors now hold an even greater responsibility to safeguard pupil wellbeing.

This comprehensive training package equips new and experienced supervisors with the knowledge and tools to effectively mentor, support, and engage with their pupils as they develop into competent practitioners.

By completing the bundle, supervisors will strengthen their understanding of Bar Standards Board (BSB) requirements and refresh the key skills and qualities needed to guide pupils successfully through their training.

Implementing this training within chambers ensures compliance with BSB expectations while helping supervisors provide meaningful support that sets pupils up for success at the very start of their careers.

Course Modules

This module guides you through your responsibilities as guardian of the practising certificate and explores how to prepare pupils for the demands of early practice. Learn how to develop their advocacy skills, instil ethical standards, and set the foundation for a successful and principled career as a barrister.

Increase your understanding of equality and diversity at the Bar, gaining knowledge on various types of discrimination, legal and regulatory requirements, and practical steps that you can take to promote equality and diversity in chambers.

You'll also explore chambers’ legal and regulatory obligations, and learn practical strategies for mitigating bias and promoting fairness in recruitment and day-to-day interactions.

Understand the principles of fair recruitment and why they are essential within chambers. This module covers best practices for inclusive hiring, how to identify and reduce discrimination in the recruitment process, and how to use different interview formats and techniques to ensure a fair, effective, and merit-based selection.

This module is designed to encourage honest reflection and meaningful discussion about race and racism within the Bar. It aims to build understanding, empathy, and awareness of how racial inequality continues to affect individuals and the wider profession. By engaging with real experiences and current insights, the module seeks to create space for self-reflection and to inspire collective responsibility for positive change across chambers.
