Disbarred KC Resigns as Cricket Chair Following Oxford Medicine Lie

A former barrister has resigned as chair of Essex County Cricket Club after being disbarred for lying about his academic background during a barristers’ tenancy application process.

The club confirmed Anu Mohindru’s departure on Monday, issuing a brief statement:

“Essex County Cricket Club would like to place on record its thanks to Anu for his leadership and significant contribution during his time as chair of the club.”

Mohindru informed the board of his resignation at a meeting on Sunday.

His decision to step down follows a disciplinary tribunal ruling that found he had “knowingly misled” an interview panel in 2013 by falsely claiming he studied medicine at Oxford University. The panel described the fabrication as a “reckless, foolish and completely unnecessary lie,” and ordered his removal from the barristers’ profession.

Mohindru, 50, denied making any misleading statements and claimed his CV had been tampered with. In mitigation, his representatives argued that his long-standing contributions to the Bar should outweigh the damage done to the profession. However, the panel concluded that disbarment was the only appropriate outcome.

Before his disbarment, Mohindru had built a high-profile career as a criminal barrister. He was described during the hearing as a “brilliantly successful KC” whose clients included England Test cricket captain Ben Stokes.

He had been appointed interim chair of Essex CCC in 2022 and took on the role permanently in October 2023. During his tenure, Mohindru became a central figure in the club’s response to a report investigating allegations of racism made by former players. He previously offered an unreserved apology on behalf of the club to those affected by discrimination.

The Bar disciplinary ruling brings an abrupt end to a career once defined by courtroom success and recent public service. His departure also adds a new chapter to Essex CCC’s ongoing efforts to reform and rebuild trust with its players and supporters.
