Mandatory Chambers Training Requirements

Our training catalogue is designed in alignment with the guidance and requirements set by key regulatory bodies, including the Bar Standards Board, Bar Council, and Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

GDPR

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) requires annual data protection training for all members and staff. This requirement is specifically outlined in the legal sector's new GDPR standard, LOCS:23, section 8.3.9.

CyberA majority of insurance providers, and those who maintain Cyber Essentials certification, require annual training.1 hour
Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Work

Annual training is essential to withstand scrutiny from employment tribunal judges and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). This is based on the EHRC's guidance on new legislation here, as well as direct feedback from employment tribunal judges who expect organisations to demonstrate annual training implementation.

Equality and Diversity

Per the Bar Standard Board (BSB), here (page 13), E&D training should be provided to all members and staff with refresher courses provided periodically. Most sets will do this every three years which is recommended by the Bar Council as well.

Anti-Racism

The BSB's Anti-Racism Statement, released in November 2020, mandates that all staff and members undergo anti-racism training. Much like with E&D and Fair Recruitment, the best practice here is to complete training every three years.

Fair Recruitment

The BSB requires all individuals involved in recruitment processes to complete specific recruitment training. In practice, this training is to be done every three years. See here.

Pupil Supervisor

As per the BSB here (point 17), training for all those who wish to be a pupil supervisor must be completed at least every three to five years.

Fair Allocation of WorkThe BSB requires training for all those involved in case allocation. In practice, this training is conducted every three years, aligning with the BSB's Fair Recruitment and selection guidance.See here.

Manual Handling

Health and Safety legislation requires training for all staff.

Anti-Money LaunderingIf any of chambers/ members work falls within Money Laundering regulations then they will need to be aware of their specific obligations and steps required per BSB. The BSB, in conjunction with anti-money laundering legislation, requires chambers and members whose work falls under money laundering regulations to be aware of their specific obligations and required steps. Anti-Bullying and Harassment

The BSB is focusing on this area and it is anticipated that training will become mandatory for all by the end of 2025.
