Anti-Racism Training
Designed to raise awareness and initiate conversations surrounding racism at the Bar.
At the Bar, racism is a complex and difficult subject to engage with. However, all chambers are expected to evaluate and strengthen their commitment to anti-racism, as set out in requirements by the Bar Standards Board.
After consulting with industry experts and individuals who have a personal understanding of experiences with racism at the Bar, we have developed a Bar-specific anti-racism training course to support chambers and barristers in meeting their mandatory requirements.
The module aims to give you an understanding of the issues around race, how this can affect your colleagues at the Bar, and an opportunity to self-reflect and explore further conversation within your chambers and wider networks.
What will you learn?
- An understanding of what racism is and its different forms.
- The consequences of racism at the Bar.
- Understand what microaggressions are and how to reduce their presence in chambers.
- Understand why the Bar is driving racial equality.
- Be aware of the Chambers’ anti racism responsibility.
- Recognise race related systemic obstacles.
- Know of best practices in overcoming obstacles.
Who is this course for?
Barristers and chambers staff who:
- Want to meet their regulatory requirements with training which will challenge and engage them, rather than just completing a tick-box exercise.
- Are looking to engage with their own personal and professional self-awareness.
- Would like to be part of creating a culture of inclusiveness at the Bar.
- Want to offer a hybrid of e-learning and live conversations to members and staff.
- Visibly strengthen their equality and diversity programme.

"As a Black pupil who knows of the issues at the Bar and who has experienced racism first-hand, I found this course to be comprehensive and truthful. I feel like there is now authority to support the issues I have raised with members at the Bar who made me feel like I was being unnecessarily difficult. I found the course excellently addressed issues of racism (including ethnocentrism and xenophobia) and intersectionality without attempting to placate those with power at the Bar who sometimes, unintentionally or otherwise, display these harmful behaviours."
